Getting started at the FBM

Have you just started working at UNIL? Would you like an overview of the services available at the FBM?
Below is a summary of the tools and services available at UNIL.

Activate your accesses and get information about IT

When you start working at UNIL, you must first activate your IT access. You will then be able to access the resources available to you and the following documentation:

  • FBM IT Manual: flyer summarizing the main IT services available at UNIL and the FBM
  • Contact: list of FBM IT manager
  • Getting help: how to contact IT support and FBM IT support services

Communicating by email

You can configure your @unil.ch email address in the Outlook. If you need to send large files (over 30 MB), we recommend using SWITCH's transfer service: SWITCHfilesender.SWITCHfilesender. If you want to send a message to a specific group of users (e.g., all users in a department, research group, etc.), you can send your message to the appropriate mailing list (please log in with SWITCH edu-ID to access the full list of mailing list).

Save and store your professional data

Data produced in the course of your professional activities at UNIL must be stored on institutional storage infrastructure. If you are a PI, you can request the creation of a project directory from the High Performance Computing and Research Support Division (DCSR) to host your research data and manage access permissions for members of your laboratory. For administrative data, a NAS server is available. Each user also has online OneDrive storage space for their personal non-research data.

Printing

On Windows, you can install FBM printers using the FBM Utility application. If you are a Mac user, please contact the local IT manager of your department to get help in installing the printers on your computer. Finally, wherever you are on campus, you can print with PrintUNIL printers located in various UNIL buildings.

Connecting to the WiFi and VPN networks

As a UNIL user, you can connect to the Eduroam WiFi network using your UNIL login details. This network is also available at other universities (EPFL, UNIGE, etc.) and public places (CHUV, etc.). When working remotely, you can set up a secure VPN connection using Ivanti Secure Access.

Collaborate and organize online meetings

Microsoft Teams is available for making phone calls and video conference. You can also create Teams channel to make it easier to exchange and work on documents with a group of users. By creating a public link and sharing it, you allow your external people to join your discussions via the web version of Microsoft Teams.

Getting help

If you have any questions or problems, you can contact FBM IT support by phone at 50 94 or by email at supportfbm@unil.ch. If the local IT manager of your department cannot physically access your computer, you can launch the Real VNC application to allow him/her to troubleshoot your computer remotely.
